The family cellars, an example of industrial archeology - Cantina Donnafugata

The family cellars, an example of industrial archeology

The winery in Marsala, built in 1851, retains the typical layout of a Mediterranean “baglio” with a spacious courtyard, dotted with citrus and olive trees and wooden trusses, the work of master carpenters of long ago. Here visitors will be guided by young and competent staff to discover Donnafugata.

Underground barrique cellar, model of sustainable architecture - Cantina Donnafugata

Underground barrique cellar, model of sustainable architecture

The underground barrique cellar, whose architecture is reminiscent of Basilica Cistern in Istanbul, is an exciting place where visitors can discover the secrets behind the aging of some of Donnafugata's most representative wines, such as Chiarandà, Tancredi and Mille e una Notte.

Built in 2007, it is an example of sustainable architecture: carved out of the tufo rock (calcarenite), in fact, it allows a reduced use of energy to maintain the desired temperature and humidity parameters (15°C and 85%).

Sala delle Botti, the quintessence of Sicily - Cantina Donnafugata

Sala delle Botti, the quintessence of Sicily

Sala delle Botti, so called because of the large barrels preserved here, has a particular fascination due to the artifacts it houses. Here visitors can admire some of the finest pieces from the family collection: ancient ceramics made in Burgio and Caltagirone; wooden sides of traditional Sicilian carts, embellished with bucolic carvings and gaudy pictorial decorations; the “keys” of the carts, bass-reliefs carved in wood and wrought iron friezes of particular value.

An unique collection that will let you discover the soul of Sicily.

Donnafugata wines express authentic and sustainable Sicilian winemaking. Taking care of the land means paying attention to the quality of production and promoting a relationship of mutual benefit between wine and plant. Therefore, the creation of horticultural and other gardens on the estates, the integration of agricultural and natural environments, and the protection of natural areas are acts that nurture agriculture and, above all, culture, enrich the landscape with biodiversity, and enhance its beauty.

From autumn 2023, this unique setting near the sea and the evocative salt pans will host a collection of extremely rare varieties of Kolymbethra citrus trees, an Italian asset protected by FAI in the Valley of the Temples. Donnafugata's contribution to celebrating the beauty of this ancient landscape and further promoting Sicilian agrobiodiversity.
